Are you or your child going through a life change such as a new school, getting married, becoming a parent, or dealing with the loss of a loved one?
Has this change left you or your child feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed?
A life transition is the passage from one phase of life to another. In both life and nature, these times of change are inevitable and test our limits to adapt. A life transition can be something positive and predictable, such as getting married or a child starting school, or something negative, such as losing a job or a loved one. Whether planned or unexpected, positive or negative, a life transition can be challenging and stressful. Intense feelings of fear, doubt, and insecurity can leave you feeling depressed, anxious, and not in control of your life.
The process of transition includes an ending, in-between phase, and new beginning. Many of us resist transition. We may resist the pain of letting go of what was, the confusion of being in-between what was and what will be, or the unknown of a new beginning.
Life transitions also present us with the opportunity to take stock, reexamine our present way of being, and explore what we really want in life. With each transition, we get the chance to discover ourselves more fully while actively creating the next chapter in our life.
Stages of Life Transitions
Successfully moving through a transition usually involves the following stages:
1. Experiencing difficult feelings: anger, anxiety, confusion, numbness, self-doubt
2. Feeling a loss of self-esteem
3. Beginning to accept the change
4. Acknowledging the need to let go of the past and accept the future
5. Beginning to feel hopeful
6. Feeling increased self-esteem
7. Developing an optimistic view of the future
